As my elementary school Alma Mater, I was thrilled when PS#1 selected HLD to redesign and rebuild their site. The school had a new look and feel for marketing materials, and came to HLD with a well-defined theme and a list of example sites they admired.
After a few planning sessions, we kicked off with various sketches and wireframes. We agreed early on that photography would take center stage, as that conveyed immediately that the school was very different from anyplace else. It was to feel warm and inviting--like the school itself--in contrast to many other websites for elementary schools in the area.
We also agreed on a multi-phase approach to development, since they wanted a public-facing site launched as quickly as possible, and also a "Parent Portal" intranet for internal communications. Lastly it was important that the site be very easy to update, since calendars and information changed often.
HLD worked iteratively with PS#1 to produce the public-facing site, content management system and parent portal on a timetable that reflected the school's needs and priorities. We continue to work with PS#1 performing updates, modifying features and adding new functionality as their needs change.

Website and intranet were completed in separate phases over the course of about a year. HLD continues to work with PS#1 for support and new development.
