The Berkeley Technology Law Journal is the nation's preeminent journal of law and technology. It is a student-run publication of the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley. Being the important voice that they are in the legal field, they wanted a professional and clean website allowing them to communicate with their members and subscribers. They also wanted a better way to advertise their journal. Being a not-for-profit student group, they had a limited budget.

We chose to divide our time between an intricate content management system and a sleek design. After several revisions, we arrived at a high-tech, eye-catching template. Using web standards (XHTML and CSS) we were able to create one design scheme and apply it automatically to every page. This saved invaluable time and allowed us to concentrate on fine-tuning the user interface and developing the content management system.

As the publisher of a journal, BTLJ needed an easy way to manage their articles online and provide a means for people to access them. They also had other dynamic content needs, such as rotating members, directors, editorial boards ad alumni. Lastly, they needed a calendar to keep their members up to date on the organization's happenings. We implemented two systems for updating and organizing this content. The complicated content (such as the articles and calendar) was separated from the more basic content (the lists of names) for ease of updating.

When an editor submits articles, the CMS automatically sorts them into issues and volumes, and files them in the correct location in the website. The current issue is always referenced from the homepage. Calendar events can be added at any point in time and are automatically sorted and filtered for the current year. In all, a huge amount of work is done "under the hood" in the name of expediency and user-friendliness.

With all of these demands on automation and design, we were still able to bring the project in on-time and on-budget.
